At 34 Km. in length, an advance baggage handling system is in operation at the New King Abdulaziz International Airport

The general Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) has put the latest luggage handling system in operation at the New King Abdulaziz International Airport (KAIA) after installing a sophisticated and flexible system that reaches 34 Km. in length.

 

The new system aims to link all passenger’s luggage and those on transit flights with an assured accuracy and speed in transferring and delivering those luggages.  The time it takes to transfer one piece is about 9 to 25 minutes, and the new system features a trolley for each bag to ensure safety and timely delivery.

 

The luggage handling system is run through an advanced electronic system that carry passenger’s baggage from the check-in counter area to the aircraft in a short period.  This in addition to providing full-automated control without any human interference.  It is accomplished through very accurate programming, which add flight number, destination and passenger information to each piece.  This the largest system in use that transport luggage and provide full protection for passenger luggage from lost, or damage, thanks to its speed, flexibility and control.

 

The baggage handling system reaches 34 kilometers in length, which in the form of conveyor belts, 9 kilometers of which are designated for “tub trax” for fast trolleys.  All operated under a complete automated control system (SCADA), which has 220 counters for standard size luggage, while eleven counters are used for oversize luggage.  Sixteen counters are used for transit flights, while 16 conveyor belts are used for receiving luggage on arriving flights that reaches 1700 meters in length.

 

This sophisticated advanced system provides 32 x-ray machines, 1500 electric substations and contains 40,000 meters of cables.

It is noteworthy the newly installed system is operated at the new King Abdulaziz International Airport in Jeddah, which is currently going through trial opening process that was launched on May of 2018.
