December 3, 2023

His Excellency the Minister of Transport and Logistics and Chairman of the Board of Directors of the General Authority of Civil Aviation, Eng. Saleh bin Nasser Al-Jasser, and His Excellency the Minister of Transport and Aviation of the Republic of Sierra Leone, Alhaji Vandai Turay, signed a cooperation agreement on air transport services, alongside the International Conference on Air Services Negotiations (ICAN 2023) in Riyadh.

The bilateral agreement for air transport services between the two governments of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the Republic of Sierra Leone is complementary to the International Civil Aviation Convention known as the Chicago Treaty, signed in 1944 AD, which regulates international civil aviation traffic in accordance with the principles of fair and equal opportunities.

The agreement aims to establish regulatory frameworks for air transport traffic between the two countries in accordance with the principles established by the Chicago International Treaty of 1944 AD, and in keeping with developments observed by bilateral regulation. The agreement includes the regulation and granting of transport and licensing rights in accordance with international standards and rules for air safety, civil aviation security and fair competition, in addition to serving the common economic interests of the national carriers for their respective markets.

The agreement is in line with the objectives of the civil aviation sector strategy, which focuses on establishing international partnerships and signing of agreements that support the ambitious goals of the strategy. These goals aim to enhance the Kingdom's air connectivity with the world, with a target of 250 destinations, to become a global logistics platform, and to transport 330 million passengers annually by 2030.
